A Heritage of Faith
A Heritage of Faith: A History of Christianity in Nigeria chronicles the development of Christianity in Nigeria from the earliest times to the present. It reveals the breathtaking diversity, dynamism, and innovativeness that have characterised and continue to define Christianity in Nigeria.
A Heritage of Faith weaves the personal stories and pioneering efforts of the major figures that played significant roles in shaping their era, the prevailing Christian thought that defined each period, and the events happening in all parts of the country into a moving and absorbing story. This history has been greatly enriched by well-illustrated charts and the largest collection of photographs of any book on Nigeria’s church history.
This is the story of men and women who were determined to see the banner of Jesus Christ raised throughout the nation, and their stories have the power to speak afresh to us today. Their lives stand as a testimony for every generation, and they bid us pick up the spiritual torch they faithfully and courageously carried.
Messenger
Sydney Granville Elton played the most significant role in shaping Pentecostalism in Nigeria during its first half century. His impact on the movement was nothing short of revolutionary and his story is crucial to rediscovering the essence that created one of the most vibrant Pentecostal movements in the world.
Messenger explores the beginnings of Pentecostalism in Nigeria, bringing alive the stories of its major characters, the passion that catapulted the outpouring into a national phenomenon, and the first major crisis that marked the turning point in its early history. Elton’s pivotal role from these early days, and in virtually every significant initiative crucial to its development for fifty years is told in riveting detail.
At no other time—when the foundations of Pentecostal Christianity in Nigeria are being vigorously shaken, and when both the church and the nation are in desperate need of a new breed of visionary and courageous leadership—does Elton’s bold prophetic vision hold greater significance to our collective spiritual experience. Messenger will impart to you a fresh vision of God’s purpose and stir you to be a part of it.
Mojola Agbebi
This is the phenomenal story of one of the most important Christian thinkers in African history. In this biography, Ayodeji Abodunde traces the remarkable career of Mojola Agbebi, one of the most important intellectuals in West Africa in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Agbebi was the most forceful writer, pamphleteer, and debater in Lagos in his time, and his intellectual exertions were significant in shaping the cultural, political, and religious discourse of the city.
He was an outstanding preacher and one of the most successful Christian evangelists of his day, and he wrote extensively about Christian missions in West Africa. Another major focus of his writing was the upliftment of Africans everywhere, socially, politically, and economically, and he boldly countered the arguments of scientific racism and repudiated notions of European cultural superiority prevalent in his day.
This fascinating account explores several of his poems; his thoughts on the European Christian missionary enterprise in West Africa; his writings on colonialism; and his exertions in the cause of the development of indigenous literature. This biography also discusses his visit to the United States in 1903 and his observations on race relations there.
Mojola Agbebi’s career recorded many firsts: he was one of the pioneers of the first indigenous church in Nigeria; he established one of the first independent private schools in Lagos; he was the first Nigerian to visit a sitting United States President in the White House; he was a founder of the first anti-secret society in Lagos; and he was the one who initiated the celebration of Mothers’ Day in Nigeria.
